Software Leasing Trend Slams Baan Earnings
On October 21, the Baan Company announced a larger-than-expected loss of $25M. Baan's stock price tumbled more than 10% after the loss more than tripled Wall Street's prediction of losses between $8.2M and $1.4M. Revenue for the quarter was $143M, compared to $195M in the same period last year. Sales of new software fell 59% to $36M for the recent quarter, from last year's $86.6M. Baan cited the market's move toward leasing rather than buying software as one reason for its sagging revenue.

Patent Law - the Open Source Movement of the 18th Century
Recent patents issued to Amazon.com and Priceline.com on their online business methods have caught competitors by surprise. “It’s a monopoly!” they say. Of course it is.

NOTION INK ADAM SOFTWARE: to the 18th Century notion that innovations are best when shared. The Bezos patent, and most others of its ilk, don t open up their source code. Another complicating factor is Internet time. U.S. patents grant the holder seventeen years of exclusive use. 17 years is a long time anyway, but it s much too long on the Web. The USPTO needs to rework its policy for Internet business method patents. Since the Internet seems to run in dog years - one year for a dog equaling six for a human - let s apply that

Moreover, Lawson s software consists mainly of financial, procurement, and human resource transaction systems, the ERP components that customers are generally more eager to outsource. With close to 400 ASP sites already signed up, Lawson is ahead of a number of much larger and, therefore, noisier ASP proponents, some of them already usurping the title of an ASP
